2013...A KICK IN THE PANTS

And just like that, another year has flashed before my eyes.  Twenty twelve has pushed its way into the vaults, and the new year has made its entrance with promises of "better [fill in the blank]," "This is my year to [fill in the blank]," and other various resolutions.  So far so good...two days in.

Yesterday gave way to copious amounts of relaxation, something Austin and I desperately needed.  The holidays are never really a holiday (noun: a period of exemption or relief) away from anything.  The familial and gifting obligations create a stress-filled environment of best behavior, which usually ends up feeling like we're all staring the big pink elephant in the face - the fact that we all wish we could just get this holiday thing over with and move on to feeling normal again.  So, as many of our friends nursed their hangovers, we nursed coffee and pj's on the couch while bouncing between episodes of "Downton Abbey" and "Breaking Bad."  Resolution #1? Check.

Determined to start the second day off right, I spent the last few minutes before lights out scribbling down the next day's to do's in my brand new planner.  See, the idea is that I purchase the fancy new planner in hopes it'll help me stay on track with Resolution #2: Get focused and stay on track.  Here's what the list entailed:

  • 20 minute walk in the park with Evie
  • 1 hour yoga workout
  • Create new budget with YNAB
  • Do dishes
  • Pay rent
  • Put away Xmas decorations
  • 365 photo
  • IHR?
  • Write thank you notes
  • Update insurance autopay with Kathy

I'm proud that I accomplished as much as I did today (please keep in mind that Xmas decorations will be put away while watching more episodes of "Downton Abbey" tonight, and rent's not TECHNICALLY due until tomorrow), although most people would scoff at my list and call me lazy.  Since quitting the day job and moving to Dallas, finding the motivation to do anything more than sleeping in and just waking up has been pretty difficult.  In my last few sessions, my therapist convinced me that I deserved a break considering I've been working since I was 15, and I've had two or more jobs concurrently since I was in college.  Okay, fine fair enough.  But at some point, that excuse just won't hold water anymore.  So, Resolution #3 creeps in: GET PRODUCTIVE AGAIN.

Part of my lack of motivation stems from overwhelming fear, and the other half from indecisiveness.  Getting my business up and running in a new city after a quick move that I was not quite ready for is a prospect that feels overwhelmingly oppressive.  Mix into that the fact that our house in Austin is still not empty, our living room in Dallas is only 1/4 painted, nothing's on the walls (what's the point when we still have to finish painting, and I can't even figure out what's gonna go where! Oh, and let's not even start with Pinterest overload that has me pulled in so many different design directions that I don't know where to start!), and we're still trying to unpack.  How can I get organized in business when my own personal life is still cluttered?

And even while sitting here writing this, I'm indecisive as to how to even end this post. Well, at least I can rest assured that even if rent doesn't get paid until tomorrow, a new blog post is dangling in the interwebs, and I committed to at least that.

Here's to a new year full of resolutions that will one day graduate to habits. CHEERS!
